4 Lessons from my Mistakes

Failure can absolutely suck it.

Even with the expansive methodologies available on managing failure, nothing prepares you for the emotional sting of it.

Now I am no stranger to failure. I failed at math (multiple times), failed at job interviews (that one phone interview that makes me cringe when I remember it), failed on the job (whole other story) but failing at something that demands your physical, emotional, financial, and mental capabilities is a whole other beating no one prepares you for.

I hate it and quite frankly I could do without it. Dramatic I know.

I have always dreamt…

8 Indulgent but plausible plotlines

I have always enjoyed Sex and the City. If reruns were on, I would watch it enthusiastically with a glass of cheap wine, in a questionable t-shirt, whilst sporting a mud mask. Like the cliche I am.

However, I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s my favorite 90’s TV show.

But that's beside the point. It was a cultural icon.

Once upon a time, critics might have considered it shallow and vacuous, but that did not stop it from being one of the most culturally defining moments in television history.

What it lacked for in its myopic views (trust…

Your mental health reminder

It's 4 am and I can't sleep.

My eyes are heavy, from lack of sleep and I am on the verge of crying.

This is how I know I am firmly in the throes of burnout.

I recognized the symptoms of burnout immediately. For instance, it took me well over a week to write this piece, and let me tell you, it felt like I was grasping at air, attempting to string sentences together.

The scenes were dramatic. I wrote, rewrote, eventually tossing virtually most of the articles I had started, whilst having mini breakdowns along the way.

Burnout is…

A $0 strategy to gain competitive ground as a content creator

Photo by Sam Moqadam on Unsplash

I am not particularly talented.

In fact, in a sea of family members and friends who do possess talent, whatever I have is a tiny inconspicuous speck on a wall.

Now the rational part of my brain tells me to pack it in and make room for the talented people of the world, but the stubborn irrational part keeps yelling, ‘aite bet, let’s see’.

For the record, I don’t believe you need talent to make it in content creation.

I mean sure having Beyonce-sized lungs, or the writing capacity of Hemingway or the acting chops of Leonardo Di Caprio, would…

When you hear the term Animal Flow you might be forgiven to imagine people growling in unison. Ease up it's not that.

So what the hell is it?

Created by Mike Fitch, Animal flow (like the name implies) is “ground-based movement, made fun, challenging, and effective.”

He leaves behind a powerful legacy of passion and vulnerability

DMX (real name Earl Simmons) aka Dark Man X, has passed away April 9th, 2021, age 50, from an apparent drug overdose and heart attack and I don't know how to deal.

I didn't want to write today, but here I am attempting to craft words to eulogize the life and legacy of one of my favorite rappers of all time.

I was first introduced to DMXs music in the ’90s by my dad.

At that time, I was growing a steady roster of top rap artists that spoke to my formative teenage years. The likes of Jay-Z, Nas, 2pac

You are probably doing better than you think.

Life sometimes can feel like an endless barrage of Molotov cocktails on loop (cue 2020/2021).

2019 was such a year for me. With my dad’s dementia diagnosis and other unsavory things that followed, I became an angry, apathetic, distracted, person floating through life.

My friendships, mental health, and creativity took a nosedive. Basically, I was the very personification of doom and gloom.

Fast forward to 2021 and things are looking up. Sort of. I mean nothing has changed. …

You can still live a life

Photo by Jennifer Griffin on Unsplash

Grief is something that we have experienced or will invariably experience. It's a painful inescapable part of life.

But there is another level of grief that stings even more; the pain of watching someone you love slowly slip away. It's visceral and I don’t wish it on anyone.

My father has Dementia. Frontal Temporal Dementia. This means that the once vibrant man I know will slowly have his memories and speech eaten by this nasty thing. He will be gone even before he is gone.

Currently, my family and I are occupying this weird space of mourning before the actual…

Borrow some of these habits to get ahead

There is a reason we love the content creators that we do.

If push comes to shove, and we’re asked why it's simple, they seem to possess that generous yet elusive dollop of je ne sais quoi that keeps us wanting more.

Truth is that this je ne sais quoi is just a smidge of the simple puzzle that makes a successful content creator.

Tenacity, consistency, strategic investments, willpower, and habits combined all make for one hell of a formidable creator.

So if you find yourself excusing your way out of being a content creator for the simple fact you…

Sorry, you are going to have to do the work

Photo by Israel Andrade on Unsplash

Let me be honest for a second here, there are moments in the content creator life where I wanna walk- of shame back to the 9–5 life.

Moments like that happen because mostly, my brain still thinks I am an employee. So when those days happen, my productivity, organizational, and focus levels leave more to be desired.

When the smoke clears, I quickly realize that no one is going to save me and I'm gonna have to haul ass and hustle to put food on the table and make rent.

To get ahead on your content creator journey, donning the…
